Daffodil Marine Festival and Parade at Tacoma Yacht Club
April 23, 2017 @ 11:30 am - 3:00 pm
Daffodil Marine Festival and Parade, a 65 Year Tradition Continues
The Daffodil Marine Festival and Parade, the culmination of the Pierce County Daffodil parade season and the signal of the opening of the boating season in the South sound is celebrating its 65th year.
Over 175 boats from Everett to Olympia converge upon the Tacoma Yacht Club for a weekend of fun that is highlighted by a Grand Floral Boat Parade. The Parade is sponsored by the Tacoma Yacht Club and involves and is supported by the Pierce County Daffodil Festival, Sea Scouts, area Jr ROTC, City of Tacoma, Metropolitan Parks, local business and Puget Sound boating clubs.
The Marine festival runs from April 21st through the 23rd, 2017. The Grand Marine Parade finale takes place on Sunday the 23rd. The parade starts at 11:30 AM from the Tacoma Yacht Club located at 5401 Yacht Club Rd, Tacoma WA 98407 and continues past Point Ruston and along the Ruston Way Waterfront to the Foss Waterway. The club is entered from Ruston Way and is directly across from the Point Defiance Ferry dock. The parade can be viewed from the Tacoma Yacht Club, anywhere along Ruston Way or the Thea Foss Water Way.
The Daffodil Marine Parades traces its roots back to 1952 when a group of yacht club members used the daffodils from the Daffodil Land Parade to decorate their boats. The tradition expanded and grew each year with elaborately decorated themed boats. Each year approximately 175 boats and 400 boaters are welcomed into the Tacoma Yacht Basin. 30 to 40 boats participate in the parade. This year has been especially challenging. Metropolitan Parks is transforming the peninsula where the Yacht club is located into a park. The slag that made up the peninsula is being capped and the shore line is being armored to prevent erosion. Point Ruston is also continuing its development of its new Water front community adjacent to the club. Construction has been taking place 24/7. None of these obstacles will prevent this year’s Festival from taking place, when the park is complete the Daffodil Marine Festival and the Yacht club will have a beautiful new back drop, but until then, the Tradition Continues.
