Many of our members know Stan Selden as a co-founder of TWA but you may not know that he was a champion of the Tall Ships Festival and a big part of the effort to bring them back to Tacoma in 2017. He also supported the Sea Scouts and sat on the Tacoma Youth Marine Foundation Board for many years. And he worked tirelessly with many stakeholders in government, business and the non-profit sector to bring awareness to Tacoma’s waterfront.

Because Stan loved Tacoma and the waterfront, he took every opportunity to school those not entirely sold on the ‘Gritty City’ (he hated the term!) and made a convert of them. When Stan passed away last year, his family and those of us who worked alongside him looked for a way to honor his memory, thus, the Stanley Selden Maritime Fund was created.

The aim of this fund is to make grants within specific focus areas in order to enhance the quality of life for young people in the Tacoma and Pierce County area. The fund provides opportunities for all and especially youth to better access, experience and widely enjoy the Tacoma waterfront. We recently distributed our first request for grantees to apply by October 31st.

We fundraise for the Selden Fund year-round. We hope you will consider donating to help organizations and schools who support local youth in the Maritime Education field.
